I remember Firhill Street as a quiet street. There was a grocery shop in the street. I used to work in that shop. Also there was a coal merchants at the top of Firhill called albert Barrs Coal Merchants. My boyfriend of the time used to carry coal for the Barrs. I have had a swim in the canal as we always played in the area.

There used to be a wonderful ice cream shop at Queens Cross I think the name was Jaconellis maybe my spelling is wrong. I have been in the United States for 47 years but have fond memories of getting Ice Cream there.

Jaconelli's is still there and going strong.

There was a scrappie on Firhill Rd where we used to get the roof from a van or car which was used as a raft for sailing around Firhill Basin, then in the winter we used as a sledge in Ruchill Park.

Billi keep adding your pictures and dig for more information as it is great to read of other peoples memories of the area I look forward to seeing more reports regards to all Serena

to Issabella Powell. I remember Jaconellies very well it was a favourite place of ours and I am glad it is still going strong. Like you Isabella, I have great memories of Maryhill and all the wonderfull people who were neighbours, we were never afraid to play out on the streets. All kids were safe in them days not like now. Where have we gone wrong? Eh! regards Serena Craig WA
