Edit Turning Full Circle
The number 29 Maryhill Tram waits at traffic lights in the dense fog descending across the streets of Glasgow in 1950.
Once a common sight trundling along the roads brimming with passengers, the electric trams in the city were eventually replaced by oil and petrol-driven buses.
As a result of the changes, Geoffrey Lloyd, then Minister of Fuel and Power, predicted there would be an increase of 20,000 tons a year in oil consumption and a decrease of 100 million units of electricity a year.
But the wheel has turned full circle. Now the city is looking for a way to cut petrol consumption and a light electrical system is back on the drawing board.
I have comented before as I did drive the trams from Maryhill Depot. I enjoyed the job until one went on fire in the Maryhill Rd that was a disaster not to be repeated and I left to work on Alexander Busses out of Milgavie Depot. I loved the work and your sigte has brought back so many happy memories. So If My old girl friend Moira Frame reads this please give her my email address. Many thanks Serena.
